5 Killed, 35 Missing in Landslide at Badakhshan Gold Mine

At least five workers were killed and 35 others are missing after being trapped in a landslide at a gold mine in Khali village of Badakhshan’s Raghistan district, said Nek Mohammad Nazari, a spokesman for Badakhshan's governor.

According to the local officials, up to 40 workers were present at the mine when the landslide occurred.

“Residents so far have discovered five dead bodies and the fate of another 35 workers remains unknown,” said Nazari.

He said that the area where the incident happened is under the control of the Taliban and that the government cannot undertake relief and rescue efforts.

This follows a similar incident last year that took the lives of tens of workers in Kohistan district of Badakshan.
