Herat Governor Visits Iran, Discusses Trade Ties

While visiting Iran, Herat’s governor said on Tuesday that Afghanistan hopes to broaden trade and transit ties with the neighboring country.

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that governor Mohammad Asef Rahimi said the two countries have taken strides towards strengthening ties and cooperating in various sectors including economic, scientific, cultural and sports.

In a meeting with Iranian officials and local businessmen, Rahimi said there had been improvements in a number of areas, citing the health care sector. He said that in cooperation with Iranian specialists, a kidney transplant had been carried out in Herat.

According to him, drug production and human trafficking were among the key challenges in the country – stating that insurgent groups were to blame for this.

Also speaking at the meeting was Iran's consul general in Herat, Mahmoud Afkhami, who said the expansion of ties with neighboring countries was a key Iranian foreign policy commitment.

Iran's policy towards Afghanistan has been to help achieve sustainable development in the country.

Over the years, Iran has allocated and provided millions of dollars as grants and loans for the implementation of development projects as well as technical and vocational training services in Afghanistan.

Dozens of major projects have been carried out by Iran in terms of development in Afghanistan including electricity supply lines to border villages in Herat and Nimroz, and road construction projects.

Iran has also established Chabahar port, which gives land-locked Afghanistan access to open seas.
