Kamal Khan Dam in Nimroz Province 'Nearly Finished': Official

The construction of the Kamal Khan hydroelectric and irrigation dam is 86 percent complete, said an official, and so far over $85 million has been invested in the project.

The Kamal Khan Dam, built on the Helmand River in Chaharbarak district of Nimroz province, will irrigate 174,000 hectares of land in three districts and will also supply water to the provincial center.

The dam is expected to provide nine megawatts of power, and, in the first stage, it will store 52 million cubic meters of water, according to the National Water Affairs Regulation Authority.

“The Kamal Khan Dam is one of the biggest projects of the National Water Affairs Regulation Authority,” said Nizamuddin Khpulwak, the spokesperson of the authority.

The dam is 16 meters high and it will irrigate agricultural lands while also preventing flooding in the province.

“It is not only the Kamal Khan Dam. There are other dams as well that need to be built,” said Ramazan Bashardost, an MP from Kabul.

At least one million people will benefit from the dam, according to the National Water Affairs Regulation Authority.
