Ministry ‘Fails’ To Implement Plan On Job Creation

The Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled on Saturday had planned to create 74,500 jobs in 2018, but it created 5,000 jobs, a senior official of the ministry said, but added that 70 percent of those who have graduated from vocational training centers have entered the local job market.

Abdul Karim Hashemi, the Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled, said the ministry has failed to reach its goal in terms of creating jobs in 2018.

“In 2018, it was estimated that 74,500 new jobs should be created in the country, but unfortunately, around 5,000 jobs were created,” said Hashemi.

A Kabul-based investor said business owners are faced with lack of professional workforce.

“One of the problems which investors are facing is lack of professional workforce,” said Sakhi Ahmad Paiman, head of Afghanistan Industry Owners Association.

Rhee Zha Hyoung, Ambassador of South Korea to Afghanistan, said his country will continue its technical support to Afghanistan in terms of providing training opportunities for Afghanistan’s workforce.

He said South Korea annually invests at least $80 million in Afghanistan in different fields, especially in providing vocational training.

“You are not alone, Korea and the international community are with you. Afghanistan’s success is Korea and international community’s success,” he said.

Last year in December, the International Labor Organization (ILO) said that Afghanistan has the highest number of unemployed work force in the world.

The ILO officials said unemployment is one of the reasons behind insecurity, insisting that if the problem of unemployment is not addressed by the Afghan government, it will create more challenges in terms of security.

According to ILO, findings by different organizations show the rate of unemployment in Afghanistan is between 25 percent and 30 percent and indicates Afghanistan has the highest number of unemployed work force in the world.

Government statistics indicate that, in addition to the current number of unemployed, about 400,000 new people enter the work force and market annually.
