MPs Yet to Approve New Fiscal Year’s Budget

Lawmakers in the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of the Afghan parliament, have yet to approve the new fiscal year’s budget and have continue to assess the document over the past two weeks. Currently some are calling “unbalanced.”

Other MPs said the government has suspended public employees’ salaries over a delay in the budget approval by the Wolesi Jirga.

“In the 1399(2020) fiscal year budget, balanced development has not been considered for undeveloped provinces,” said Wolesi Jirga Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani said.

“Social justice should be implemented, it should not be what they want, it is not related to their father and grandfather,” MP Ali Akbar Qasimi said.

The MPs called on the government not to delay the disbursement its employees’ salaries.

“On one side the salaries are very low, and on the other side teachers or civic employees` salaries have been delayed—and it is winter,” MP Sayed Ahmad Selab said.

“An employee who received 7,000 afs five years ago, now still receives that amount of money but prices are going up,” MP Zia-Ur-Rahman said.

But the Ministry of Finance said the budget has been made balanced and is just.

“We have limited budget possibilities and because of this development has move ahead gradually,” spokesman of the ministry Shamroz Khan Masjidi said, “and we share the funds with lots of organizations.”
