Abdullah: Allowing Recount is Not ‘Ignoring’ People's Rights

Presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah said on Saturday at a gathering in Baghlan province that allowing the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to recount votes in seven provinces does not mean he and his party will ignore peoples’ rights.

Abdullah said: “I assure you that the measure we have taken does not mean we will ignore your rights.”

Abdullah on Friday asked the protestors currently blocking the offices of the IEC to allow the recount of the votes in the seven remaining provinces so that “no excuse is left.”

But he said he will not accept a presidential election based on “fraud.”

“We will not allow anything to happen against the people’s ambition for democracy,” said Abdullah.

Mustafa Mohseni, the head of Abdullah’s campaign team in Baghlan province, said: “We allowed the IEC to recount, and we expect it to account for ‘clean votes.’”

Meanwhile, supporters of Abdullah’s campaign team in Balkh province held a protest and urged the IEC to invalidate 300,000 disputed votes.

Bashir Ahmad Tahyanj, another member of Abdullah`s team who participated in the protest, said: “People’s vote, people`s determination, people`s decision is our redline, and will not let our redline (be crossed) a millimeter.”

The election entered a crisis after some campaign teams urged the IEC to invalidate 300 thousand votes, but the IEC has not done so.
