The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said that so far the result sheets from 14,000 biometric devices--out of nearly 30,000--have been transferred from the devices to the election commission database.

“We compare all the forms, result sheets and the photographs that are received, we compare it site-by-site,” said Kabir Panahi, head of IEC IT department.

The IEC officials also said that from the total number of 25,000 biometric devices which were sent across the country, 5,000 of them have arrived to the election commission from Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir and Maidan Wardak provinces.

“From 25,000 polling sites, we have received result sheets from 14,000 sites through biometric devices,” said IEC commissioner Mohammad Abdullah.

The biometric devices are supposed to be swiftly relocated to the IEC data center at the end of voting.

As controversy over the biometric and non-biometric votes gathers momentum, presidential candidate Rahmatullah Nabil at a press conference on Tuesday said he knows of widespread fraud by two specific teams and there is a need for a second round to ensure a legitimate winner and a substantial voter turnout.

“Over 29,000 biometric devices were distributed in Afghanistan, but only 5,000 of them have arrived to the center; from 11 million ballot papers, only two million were used. Where are these biometric devices and ballot papers now?” asked presidential candidate Rahmatullah Nabil.
