2nd Wave of COVID-19 Could Infect 90,000: MoPH

Over 90,000 people could be infected with COVID-19 in a second wave during the winter season, the Afghan Ministry of Health said.

This comes as the number of positive cases is increasing.

Statistics of the Ministry of Health shows that up to 150 people are getting infected with the virus daily.

According to the Ministry of Health, 121 new active cases of COVID-19 have been registered across Afghanistan over the past 24 hours. Of that number, 12 have died.

Meanwhile, officials at the Afghan-Japan hospital in Kabul said they are still facing a shortage of ventilators and other health equipment required to treat the patients.

According to the doctors at the Afghan-Japan hospital, over 90 COVID-19 patients daily consult the hospital for evaluations.

“The lack of oxygen is a big problem. We need to produce oxygen ourselves. Also, we are faced with the problem of insufficient space for patients” said Zalmay Rishteen, the head of the Afghan-Japan hospital.

Last night, President Ashraf Ghani visited the Afghan-Japan hospital.

Currently, 14 COVID-19 patients are kept in the ICU unit of the Afghan-Japan hospital. Doctors at the Afghan-Japan hospital have said that 80 percent of these patients need ventilators, however, there are insufficient ventilators and a lack of other equipment for all patients.

“We have 6 ventilators right now, we did not get any masks for the past six months,” said Qand Agha Hassan, a doctor at the Afghan-Japan hospital.

“We are facing insufficient personnel numbers because the Ministry of Health itself reduced the number of personnel,” said Shereen Agha Naseri, a doctor at the Afghan-Japan hospital.

“The people take the coronavirus very casually, but many are dying from this virus,” said Abdul Hadi, a COVID-19 patient at the Afghan-Japan hospital.

Health officials have said that with a surge in the number of positive cases of COVID-19, fatalities will also increase.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of those infected with COVID-19 so far is about 45,936 patients.
