Cancer Cases Rising in Afghanistan: MoPH

Officials at the Ministry of Public Health voiced concerns over the surge in cancer cases, saying that an estimated 16,000 to 20,000 Afghans lose their lives to cancer annually.

The MoPH is planning to establish cancer care centers in cooperation with the World Health Organization in several provinces.

February 4th is the international day dedicated to fighting cancer.

“In Afghanistan, annually, around 40,000 people are infected by cancer. Around 16,000-20,000 people are losing their lives to the disease annually,” said Mohammad Hussien Ghias, deputy minister of Public Health, at a press conference on Sunday in Kabul.

The officials blamed the previous Afghan government for not properly considering the status of the Afghan health sector.

“There has not been good work in the health sector during the times of the previous governments,” said Naimullah Ayoubi, an official within the ministry.

There are three active cancer care centers--in Kabul, Kandahar and Herat--the official said, adding that the ministry will establish several other centers in various provinces.
