Polio Vaccine Campaign Starts in 23 Provinces: Ministry

After reporting two positive cases of polio in Nangarhar province, the Ministry of Public Health announced on Monday a polio vaccine campaign will start in 23 provinces.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry said that 6.4 million children will be vaccinated in this campaign.

"We selected regions that are at risk, including 217 districts, and our target is 6.4 million children vaccinated," said Sharafat Zaman Amerkhail, a spokesman for the Health Ministry.

Mohammad Mumtaz, 50, has had polio since he was 12 and he called on health organizations to make serious efforts to eradicate polio.

"Everyone should speak about it--the campaign to prevent their children from polio. Disability is a problem in a life," said Mohammad Mumtaz.

Meanwhile, some country residents called on health organizations and the health ministry to hold more campaigns to eradicate polio.

"Before, because of security reasons, the vaccination team could not go to some regions. Now we want vaccine in those regions to vaccinate our children and protect them from this disease," said Baryali, an Uruzgan resident.

Vaccinators asked the citizens of the country to cooperate with them in vaccinating their children.

"We ask all families to allow us to vaccinate their newborn children, and those under age 5," said Feriba Amin, a vaccinator.

Meanwhile, two polio cases were reported in the Koot and Batikoot districts of Nangarhar.
