Reported Skin Diseases Increased by 50% in Balkh: Health Officials

The officials of Abu Ali Sina-e-Balkhi Regional Hospital reported a 50% increase in skin diseases compared to last year in this province.

Ali Asghar Malek, the head of the skin department at the hospital, said they have treated 25,000 skin patients in 1402; but in the first four months of 1403 (solar year), at least 16,000 skin patients visited this hospital, and nearly 1,000 of them underwent surgery.

The officials of the skin department of this hospital said: “In 1403 ( solar year), after 4 months we see approximately 4000 patients per month, which means it has doubled compared to the past, and the reason why people suffer from skin problems in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif is one of the environmental reasons, that is, the current hot weather causes skin diseases to occur, and not observing personal hygiene causes some skin diseases to occur."

Doctors consider non-observance of hygiene tips, hot air and the use of self-medication as the causes for the skin disease increase.

Yar Mohammad Abdali, a doctor, said: "The patients who come to us are treated well and appropriately in the government hospital, just as we treat them in our private examination rooms. The good thing about this hospital is that medicine and all facilities are distributed to the patients for free.

Some people who suffer from this disease describe their condition as follows:

The patient Abdul Majid said: "It's been one and a half years since I had a pimple on my face, and I was in a lot of trouble." I wanted to go to private clinics, but they said that the operation would be done, and I did not have the money for the operation. I came here and today I will be operated on for free. Here, medicine and all the facilities are provided for me for free, which makes me very happy."

Dost Mohammad, a patient, said: "I used different plasters, but it didn't work. I would be fine for ten or fifteen days, then the itch would come back, and when I itched, it would be scalding hot. I am currently under treatment here and I am very happy that I am getting better."

However, doctors in this hospital say that in addition to men, these days more women and children with skin diseases also come to them for treatment.

Ruhollah Ahmadi, a doctor, said: "At this time, there is a disease called malaria, which is caused by the heat of the air because some families are poor and do not have air conditioners or heaters." "Although it is not sari, it increases in the hot season."
