Officials at Herat Regional Hospital told TOLOnews that more than a thousand children suffering from seasonal diseases are brought to this hospital for treatment daily.
With the onset of warmer weather, most of these children are suffering from diarrhea and cholera.
Mirwais Abedi, head of the children's ward at Herat Regional Hospital, told TOLOnews: "Most of the sick children brought to the children's ward of Herat Regional Hospital are under five years old. According to our daily statistics, more than a thousand sick children are brought to the children's ward daily, divided into three categories: red line, yellow line, and green line patients."
Some companions of the patients complain about the lack of space and medical facilities at this hospital.
"Our patient is in a coma, and there is no care in this hospital. There is a lack of doctors, a lack of medicine, and a lack of space. Our patient is on one bed, and four other patients are also lying next to him," said Ghulam Farooq, a patient caretaker.
"There is no proper care here. They say they will take care of it, but they do it ten days later. It's been three days, and they haven't even seen the patient," said Juma Khan, another patient caretaker.
According to doctors, in addition to the regional hospital, hundreds of children with seasonal diseases are also taken to private hospitals daily.
"If the patient is in critical condition and comes to the hospital late or is treated arbitrarily, it can cause the child to go into shock and become irrecoverable. It can also lead to brain infections or blood infections, causing death among children," Ahmad Shaheer Shaheem, a pediatric specialist, told TOLOnews.
In addition to Herat residents, patients from neighboring provinces like Farah, Badghis, and Ghor are also brought to Herat Regional Hospital for treatment. According to hospital officials, the facilities and capacity of the children's ward are not sufficient to accommodate all the patients who come for treatment.
