Officials: Over 15,000 Addicts Are Under Treatment

The Ministry of Public Health said that 15,000 drug addicts are under treatment in sixteen drug addiction treatment centers across the country

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Public Health, at least 55,000 drug addicts have been treated in these sixteen centers over the past two years.

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, the spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, told TOLOnews: "Our goal is to treat every addict across the country, in areas and even homes. In this regard, we have launched a special program to carry out the treatment process from house to house."

At the same time, Abdul Nasir Munqad, head of the 1,000-bed hospital for drug rehabilitation, said that between 3,000 to 3,500 addicts are collected and treated in this center, and 800 other addicts are treated at the request of their families.

Meanwhile, the head of the 1000-bed hospital for drug rehabilitation, criticized the lack of cooperation from international organizations.

Munqad said: "If they are sincere in their words, they should cooperate with us in every section, including food, clothing, and medicine provision."

Noorullah, a teacher who has worked in one of the schools for nearly two decades, is undergoing treatment at this center. He said that he became addicted to drugs 18 years ago.

Noorullah told TOLOnews: "The family made this decision. They said you should go to the hospital once, experience its problems, so you don't return to this act again."

Among the addicts under treatment at this center are those who have been transferred to Kabul from the provinces.

"We request the Islamic Emirate to provide job opportunities for these youths so that they do not return to this act in the future," said Imran, an addict under treatment.

Meanwhile, the head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Afghanistan, in a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Counter-Narcotics of the Ministry of Interior, assured the cooperation of this organization in combating drugs and treating addicts in the country.
