DABS Gives One-Month Deadline to Repay Electricity Bills

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, Afghanistan's power company, warned that it would refer customers to the judicial system if they do not pay their electricity bills within one month's time.

Talking to the press in Kabul on Wednesday, DABS chief Abdul Rahman Rahmani put the total of unpaid debt owed by individual consumers and companies at around  26 million Afs.

“All who owe debts to Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat have a one-month deadline to pay their loans. If they do not pay, their cases will be referred to the judicial system,” he said.

DABSs officials have held discussions with the Chinese and Iranian companies to scale up the amount of electricity in the country.

“We are in contact with some Chinese government companies to produce electricity by burning coal. It means we are trying to facilitate power which is cheap and better for Afghans,” said Hikmatullah Noorzai, a spokesman for DABS.

There are expectations that DABS will face a power shortage if it cannot gather funds.

“If the electricity bills owed by politicians and industrial companies are not paid, it will affect Da Breshna Sherkat and the people of Afghanistan as well as the countries from which Afghanistan purchases the power,” said Farid Ahmad Karim, a trader.

According to DABS figures, Afghanistan needs 1,200 megawatts of power but currently has access to only 850 megawatts.
