Italian Embassy Hosts Event on Afghan Education in Washington

A high-level event to address Afghanistan's education crisis and to ensure a future for Afghan women and girls’ education was held in Washington.

The meeting was hosted by the Italian embassy in the US.

The meeting was attended by UN special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, Richard Bennett; US special envoy for Afghanistan, Thomas West; US envoy for Afghan human rights and women Rina Amiri, and several other diplomats and country representatives.

“What Afghan women really need is more action. Here we’re already hearing that actions are being taken to make a difference,” Bennett told the meeting.

“We need to stay focused on Afghanistan and on half of Afghanistan's population,” West said.

“Our goal is to spotlight the dire conditions of Afghan women and to keep their fundamental rights high in the global agenda despite the other emergencies and challenges at the international level,” said Mariangela Zappia, the Italian ambassador to the US.

Meanwhile, female students called for the reopening of their schools.

“I myself have this ambition to become a doctor in the future. But they do not allow us to reach our dreams,” said Sara, a student.

“They said that they are working on a plan. When will this plan be finalized? Two years have passed,” said Zainab, a student.

“This is our right, from which all the women of our country have been deprived,” said Fatana, a student.

The Italian embassy said on Twitter that without women’s participation, Afghan society is poorer Afghanistan’s economy is weaker.

“Depriving Afghanistan of the contribution of women is not only wrong; it is counterproductive and self-defeating," it said.
