Cash Aid Packages Effective for Afghan Currency’s Stability: Union

The arrival of a $40 million humanitarian cash aid package has left a positive impact on the value of Afghani against foreign currencies in the market, the Money Exchangers Union said.

According to the union, one US dollar is exchanged for 90 Afs currently at the market.

“The humanitarian aid of the United Nations for Afghanistan has a vital role in the stability of the Afghan currency. This also addresses the problem of the people,” said Mirza Katawazai, head of the union.

“We call on the international community to continue the humanitarian aid to reach to certain individuals,” said Abdul Rahman Zirak, a spokesman for the Sarai Shahzada Market.

Referring to the arrival of $40 million humanitarian aid package in Afghanistan, UNAMA on Twitter said: “Cash shipped to Afghanistan by the UN is placed in UN accounts in a private bank. It is used by UN agencies to support its humanitarian work.”

UNAMA added that “announcements by non-UN entities about UN fund shipments are misleading and unhelpful."

The aid cash package for humanitarian purposes arrived in Afghanistan after nearly one month.

Earlier, a former member of the Afghan Central Bank’s supreme council, Shah Mehrabi, said that since mid-December 2022, United Nations flights have stopped transferring cash aid to Afghanistan as part of humanitarian assistance.

Kabul residents meanwhile called for humanitarian aid to be provided in a transparent way.

“There is no job or business. We have no idea what to do. And we have no idea how to afford house rent or electricity and water nbills,” said Mehrabuddin, a resident of Kabul.

“We need help. All the people need help. You see all the people and realize that all of them are jobless and have no income. There is nothing,” said a resident of Kabul.

Statistics from the Da Afghanistan Bank (Central Bank) show that nearly $2 billion in cash aid have arrived in Afghanistan since August 2021.
