Football: Afghans to Play India in World Cup Qualifier

Afghanistan’s national football team will face India on Tuesday in Qatar for the final group match in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers.

The match will kick off at 6:30 pm in Afghan time and will be aired on Lemar TV.

“Tonight’s match is a key match, and the team has prepared well,” said the coach of the Afghan team, Anosh Dastgir.

“On the first day I said that our last match is a key match, which is against India,” said Dastgir. “We were waiting for this match and are completely ready. Both teams want to play football....”

Dastgir believes that the Afghan players are “good quality compared with Indian players” as they have been playing in the European leagues.

Farshad Noor, Afghanistan team’s captain, also hopes to win this match and said: “We will see which team will win. Both teams will want to win the match, but our team’s quality is higher.”

“After the Oman match, we trained and rested well,” he said.

On Friday, Oman defeated Afghanistan 2-1 in the match, which was held at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar.

Afghanistan’s team started their campaign with a 6-0 loss to Qatar in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers.

But they came back strong, beating Bangladesh 1-0.

They lost 3-0 to Oman in their third match. Then they tied 1-1 with India before losing 1-0 to Qatar.

Afghanistan prepared for the June qualifiers with a training camp in UAE where they played a friendly match against Indonesia (3-2 win) and Singapore (1-1 draw).

After the qualifiers resumed in June 2021, they had a 1-1 draw with Bangladesh and then lost to Oman 1-2 in their last match.
