Funeral of Famed Wrestler Mohammad Ibrahim, 96, Held in Kabul

Mohammad Ibrahim, the first Afghan wrestling medalist in an international competition, was buried on Monday morning in Kabul.

Mohammad Ibrahim, who was also known as “Haji Qahraman” (champion), earned a bronze medal in an Asian wrestling competition in 1962.

Ibrahim died at age 96 due to diabetes at a hospital in Kabul.

“He was one of the founders of the Maiwand wrestling club which was established in 1340 (solar year),” said Shir Jan Ahmadi, a wrestling coach.

The officials at the Afghanistan Wrestling Federation said that Ibrahim had trained hundreds of wrestlers in the country.

“The sport department supports the athletes when they are young and support thems when they get older as well. This is our duty,” said the acting head of the Afghanistan Wrestling Federation.

Many Afghan wrestlers participated in the funeral ceremony of Ibrahim.

“His death is a great tragedy for us and to athletes,” said Sami, a wrestler.

“Within the past three to four years, there has been good progress for wrestling in the country,” said Sayed Ibrahim, a student of Mohammad Ibrahim.

However, Ghulam Hussein, son of the slain wrestler blamed the athletic departments for not considering the condition of Mohammad Ibrahim.

“The sports departments and those who were responsible did not pay attention, but those who were not even responsible for sports facilities, they offered helped,” he said.

His death was mourned by many Afghans, including former President Hamid Karzai.

Karzai said that Ibrahim had brought many honors to the Afghan nation.
