Profile: Samir, Orphaned by War

On Wednesday, officials at “Mahboubeh Madar” Orphanage stated that they had recently registered Samir, a child at the center whose parents were killed in the ongoing war in Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

Left without a guardian, the child came to Kabul from Kunduz after spending days and nights out on the streets.

The orphanage officials say that the war has had an extremely negative effect on the child and they are highly concerned about his mental state.

Samir doesn’t know how old he is and he has painful stories about the war. He says his father was killed in a Taliban attack a few years ago and his mother died from a rocket hit on their house.

“Our carpets, our tables and homes caught fire. I came here (Kabul), and now I’m working in Kabul,” said Samir, the war victim.

He stated that he slept on the streets of Kabul for three months. Now, Samir has a warm bed to rest on and bread to eat. He’s been studying at the orphanage for a week now, with all the stationery and pens and paper that he needs. He says he’s tired of the war and does not want to go back to the past.

“If peace comes, I want to study and become an engineer, manager or doctor in the future,” Samir adds.

Obaid Jahid, an instructor in the orphanage, said the war has had a negative impact on Samir’s mental state, so he is kept in isolation frequently because of his short temper and anger issues.

“He is in isolation and aggressive with the other children, and frequently he gets angry and fights,” says Obaid Jahid.

“Hundreds of orphans are young, growing up with an uncertain future and one of the main causes for this is the war between the conflicting groups in Afghanistan,” said Khalid Malikzada, head of the Mahboubeh Madar Orphanage.

Officials at the orphanage say about 300 children are being educated at their center and most of them are war victims.
