12 Police Force Members Killed in Nimroz Blasts

At least 12 police force members, including district police chief Faiz Mohammad Hotak, were killed in two explosions in Kang district, Nimroz province, on Tuesday, said Nematullah Sediqqi, a member of Nimroz's provincial council.

Sediqqi said the two explosions happened near the center of Kang district on Tuesday. Both were roadside bomb blasts, he said. The first incident occurred when a Humvee police vehicle hit a roadside bomb and five police were killed.

He said that the second explosion occurred when a vehicle carrying seven police force members, including the Kang district police chief, hit a roadside bomb. The victims were on their way to the scene of the first explosion and were killed in the blast.

This follows two similar explosions in Maidan Wardak province that occurred on Tuesday morning in which five civilians were killed and nine more were wounded.

A statement by Maidan Wardak governor’s office says that five of the wounded are women and four others are children.

The blasts hit two vehicles: a bus and a Toyota Corolla-model vehicle, both carrying civilians, the statement read.

The victims of the incident were sent to the provincial health center for treatment, said Mohammad Salim Asgharkhil, head of the provincial hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

This comes amid a sharp increase in violence in the country. At least 15 civilians were killed in a car bomb explosion in Ghor province in the west of Afghanistan earlier this week.

The Kota Ashro village in the Jalrez district in Maidan Wardak has been volatile in recent days. Nearly seven days ago, a car bomb explosion targeted a security forces outpost in the area that left four security personnel wounded.

The security forces in the outpost were under siege for almost five days, according to Abdul Jabar, a soldier in the outpost, who spoke in a recorded video posted on social media this weekend.

Commando forces conducted an operation in Kota Ashro area, Jalrez district, on Monday and rescued the besieged forces, according to a statement by the Defense Ministry.
