Govt Issues 4,500 Passports A Day Across Country

The Passport Department issues over 2,000 passports in Kabul and at least 2,500 in the provinces daily, but officials said that the number of applicants has increased recently amid a rise in insecurity in the country.

But the passport department and the Ministry of Interior Affairs did not provide exact figures about the distributed passports in the last three months despite repeated requests by TOLOnews.

“It is less than 2,000 in Kabul… At least 2,500 and even 3,000 in provinces are processed and we publish and send it through posts to the applicants,” said Muslima Amani, head of the passport department.

A TOLOnews reporter and visitors attest that the passport directorate is busy every day during working days.

“I have applied for a passport because my mother is sick and her illness cannot be treated here,” said Maryam, a Kabul resident.

Khodadad Rezaee, a passport applicant in Kabul, said economic issues and an increase in insecurity in recent months in the country have left him with no option but to leave the country. He said he will leave the country with his family to one of the neighboring countries for safety.

“I will be able to earn bread somewhere, but I am tired with this situation because it is difficult for me in terms of security… I have applied for a passport to leave the country,” said Rezaee.

Nabiullah Hafizi, an employee of the passport department in Kabul, said that usually the number of passport applicants increases in winter as well as when insecurity intensifies.

“Most of them travel to Pakistan and Iran for work due to lack of work here during winter,” he said.

The Passport Department has 267 employees, including 140 security force members.
