Takhar Residents Take Up Arms Against Taliban

A number of residents in Takhar, a province in northern Afghanistan, have taken up arms to fight alongside the Afghan security forces against the Taliban.

These local fighters are operating under the leadership of Dr. Gulistan, the former head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Takhar.

Meanwhile, the political office of Ahmad Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the National Hero of Afghanistan, has said that people in Takhar, Baghlan, Kunduz and Samangan provinces are ready to start the second resistance against the Taliban under his leadership.

Those who have taken up arms in Takhar have said that they are ready to fight under Massoud’s leadership.

“We have to show to these aliens (Taliban) that this is the center of resistance, this area has an owner and brave youthq,” said Dr. Gulistan.

Some of the armed men said that they were attacked by the Taliban on Monday after they gathered in the area to talk about the second resistance against the Taliban.

“The Massoud Foundation and the political office of Ahmad Massoud are seeking a major political movement in Afghanistan to be ready for a possible boycott of the peace negotiation process by the Taliban or if they refuse to talk to the government,” said Rahmatullah Bezhanpor, member of Jamiat-e-Islami party (Atta Mohammad Noor faction).

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zia Saraj, the head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said that discussions are underway with all the armed groups that were created in cooperation with the Afghan security institutions.

“We are in talks with them, our discussions will start with them soon…anyone within the structure of the government itself. As you know, we have some groups known as public uprising forces who operate within the framework of the government and based on the needs that we have in some areas they cooperate with us,” said Saraj.

Nevertheless, Amrullah Saleh, the First Vice President of Afghanistan, said that people all over the country are ready to defend the country against any hostile move.

“The national spirit has been on the rise compared to the past when there was discussion about the withdrawal of US forces. Mr. President, there is no province where the people do not consult us and say that they are ready to defend what we call 'the gains,'” said Saleh.

Previously, armed men loyal to former Jihadi leader Mohammad Ismail Khan in Herat, and Hizb-e-Islami supporters in Badakhshan and Baghlan provinces have also shown their military preparedness.Public uprising forces were also reported active in Maidan Wardak and Daikundi provinces.
