44 Leave Pamir Area of Badakhshan, Obtain Kyrgyz Citizenship

Officials said 44 residents of Badakhshan’s Pamir area left the mountainous region in Afghanistan's northeast and obtained Kyrgyzstan citizenship. They are seeking a better life by leaving their native living style, officials said.

The deputy governor of Badakhshan, Khair Mohammad Khairzada, said they are from six families and most of them are youth.

According to local officials, 106 residents from the area have previously obtained Kyrgyzstan citizenship.

Lack of education opportunities, food, security and health services, as well as harsh weather, are the main reasons pushing the residents of Pamir to leave the region.

“When the native residents of Pamir leave the area, we will lose centuries of culture," said Zabihullah Atiq, an MP from Badakhshan.

Recently, the state ministry for natural disasters management pledged 10 million Afs for the Pamir residents.

“Required preparations have been made so work on the construction of roads will open the way (to Pamir),” said Tamim Azimi, a spokesman of the ministry. “Education and health services belong to the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Education. We await the direction of the first vice president.”

Pamir residents said they have been ignored by governments over the last several decades.
