Pakistan and China foreign ministers on Saturday called on all warring parties in Afghanistan to agree on a comprehensive ceasefire and work together to achieve a broad-based, inclusive and negotiated political settlement.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi made the call at the third session of the foreign ministers’ strategic dialogue in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, China.

Quoted by Dawn news, a joint statement reads that the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to facilitate and support an “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” peace and reconciliation process for the early realization of a peaceful, stable, united and prosperous Afghanistan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said his country stands ready to work with Pakistan to promote the building of a closer community for a shared future in the new era.

At a joint press briefing after the meeting, Wang said the two countries agreed to continue the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, strengthen coordination in international and regional affairs, jointly oppose hegemonism and unilateralism, and maintain the international system with the United Nations as the core and the international order based on the international law, according to Dawn news.

On the current situation in Afghanistan, Wang said that as neighboring countries of Afghanistan, both China and Pakistan are most directly affected by the situation in Afghanistan.

After in-depth communication, the two sides decided to carry out joint campaigns in five areas, Wang said.

He said the two countries agree to strive for peace to avoid the spread of war as a top priority, actively promote peace through talks and advance intra-Afghan talks, work together to combat terrorism and push all major forces in Afghanistan away from terrorism, promote coordination and cooperation among neighboring countries of Afghanistan, and urge the United States to earnestly fulfill its responsibilities for the peace and reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The fourth China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue was held in Guiyang earlier this June where the foreign ministers reached a consensus on the Afghan peace and reconciliation process, as well as trilateral cooperation.

During their meetings in Chengdu, the two sides reiterated their stances.

“The US hasty troop withdrawal has not reached its target of quelling terrorism in Afghanistan, nor has it brought peace to the region. Instead, it created a new security black hole. It is clearly irresponsible,” Wang said.

“The foreign minister has said on Afghanistan the five-point strategy that he just spelled out, we are leaving it on how to move forward and that's the conclusion on the discussion that they had today, that Pakistan completely endorses the five-point strategy on Afghanistan,” Qureshi said.
