Lawmakers Unanimously Support ANDSF in Joint Statement

As clashes have intensified around the country, especially in major cities, the National Assembly – the upper and lower house of Parliament – in a joint statement Monday announced their firm support for the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) and the Islamic Republic and said the hard-won gains of the last 20 years must be preserved.

The lawmakers said they also support the protection of women’s rights and seek financial and political support from the US and the UN.

“The National Assembly as the highest legislative institution supports the principle of the republic and will not allow the achievements of the last two decades to vanish,” the statement reads.

The lawmakers said that the Afghan forces are sacrificing their lives every day to fight “the enemy;” therefore, they have full support from the National Assembly.

“The country has been at war for 43 years and we are seeking lasting stability and will fulfil our responsibility in this respect,” the statement said.

The statement called on the Taliban to stop its activities against the economy and stop “destruction.”

This comes as the Taliban has captured a large number of districts as well as seven border towns, cutting off imports and exports in many of them.

The Afghan government has lost 2.7 billion Afs (over $33 million) in customs revenue over the last four weeks as key border towns have fallen to the Taliban during this period, an official from the Ministry of Finance said last week.

Over the past month, the government has lost control of key border towns including Islam Qala in Herat, Abu Nasr Farahi in Farah, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, Ai Khanum in Takhar, Dand Patan in Paktia and Shirkhan in Kunduz province.

President Ghani spoke at the special meeting of the National Assembly and blamed the Taliban for becoming more violent than in the past.
