Afghans Complain of Delays in Iran Visa Process

A number of people who were gathered in front of the Iranian embassy in Kabul complained of the lack of transparency in the visa-issuing process.

They said the official process was slow and some people on the side were offering visa services for around $2,000.

The embassy of Iran resumed its consulate service three days ago after a longtime suspension of the visa process as a result of fall of the former government.

The visa applicants accused the Iranian officials of negligence.

“It has been two days since I came here,” said, Luqma Hashimi, a resident of Kapisa province. “There is a dense crowd, nothing is clear.”

A resident of western Herat province, Mohammad Jan, said: “I paid my insurance and submitted my medical card. If my visa is not issued today, I will lose the 20,000 Afs I paid for the ticket.”

Many of the applicants were seeking trade, transit and educational visas.

Meanwhile, some of the visa applicants said there was no proper system in place for the visa process.

A visa applicant, Habbi, said: “It wasn’t so crowded previously but all the people are trying to escape the country.”

The head of a tourism company, Ahmad Siar Rahimi, said that the Iran embassy has been issuing three types of visas. “A trade visa costs around 45,000 Afs, a transit visa costs 290 and there are visas that cost from 35,000 Afs to 40,000,” he said.

TOLOnews could not obtain a comment from Iranian officials regarding the visa process. However, according to people at the tourism companies, the embassy has been issuing between 100 to 200 visas each day.
