Iran Meeting on Afghanistan to Issue a Declaration

Iran will host a regional meeting on Afghanistan on Wednesday and the meeting is set to opened by Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.

Iran’s embassy in Kabul said a declaration containing the shared views of the regional countries on Afghanistan’s issues will likely be issued at the end of the meeting.

Bahadur Aminian, Iran’s ambassador to Afghanistan, said Afghanistan’s political, economic and security situation, as well as the way to establish an inclusive government, will be discussed.

“We hope that this meeting brings the views of these countries closer. We hope that talks will be held inside Afghanistan between different groups so that an inclusive government will be formed,” Aminian said.

Foreign ministers of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan will attend the meeting in person while foreign ministers of China and Russia are set to join virtually.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he will send a message to the meeting on Afghanistan.

“Our neighbors will express their concern about the future of Afghanistan that if the current situation continues and the Islamic Emirate opponents get stronger day by day, and if they attempt to cross Afghanistan’s borders, it will be a heavy burden both on Afghanistan's neighbors and the Islamic Emirate,” said Sayed Ishaq Gailani, leader the National Solidarity Movement of Afghanistan.

The Islamic Emirate has not been invited to the meeting, but its officials say that they hope the meeting will improve the political relations between Kabul and Tehran.

“Our neighbors have unbreakable ties with us. They should cooperate with us in diplomacy, trade and other areas,” said Islamic Emirate spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The Tehran meeting follows the Moscow meeting on Afghanistan which was attended by representatives of ten countries and officials of the Islamic Emirate last week.
