Tajikistan, China Deny Military Base Construction

Days after reports about the construction of a military base in Tajikistan near the Afghan-Tajik border by China, both Tajikistan and China have rejected the reports and the construction of such a military base.

Tajikistan’s internal affairs ministry in a statement said the construction of a military base is not on the agenda.

“The information about the alleged establishment of a Chinese military base on the territory of Tajikistan is at variance with reality and this issue is not on the agenda of bilateral relations,” reads the statement.

The statement, however, said Tajik and Chinese forces will hold joint tactical exercises in Tajikistan’s Badakhshan autonomous mountainous region and all the necessary equipment and expenses will be provided by China.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying,  speaking at a press conference, also rejected the establishment of the military base.

“After assessment, we found that the reports about the establishment of a military base near the Afghan border are not true,” she said.

The reports and rejections come as the Islamic Emirate repeatedly has said no country will be threatened from Afghanistan.

The Islamic Emirate spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on Saturday at a press conference once again said they will not allow anyone to threaten other countries from Afghanistan territory.

“Afghanistan's territory is not a threat against any country. We are committed and pledge that no country, including regional countries and world countries, will be threatened from Afghan soil,” Mujahid said.
