PM Khan Calls for 'Immediate Assistance' to Afghans

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan in a meeting with US senators urged that immediate assistance be provided to Afghanistan to prevent a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse in the country.

The four-member delegation was headed by Senator Angus King, who was joined by Senator Richard Burr, Senator John Cornyn and Senator Ben Sasse.

The Pakistani prime minister's office said that Imran Khan also discussed a range of other topics with the US senators.

“The PM particularly underscored the urgent need to support the Afghan people by taking all possible measures to prevent a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse. The PM also highlighted (the) importance of closer cooperation to address the security threats in the region, including terrorism,” Khan’s office said.

Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Mansour Ahmad Khan, told the Russian TASS news agency that Russia’s role was important for peace in Afghanistan. He said that Islamabad was in talks with Moscow, Beijing and Washington to ensure lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.

“I think that, as far as the recognition is concerned, it is a matter of when the neighbors of Afghanistan come together into a consultative process; when there is harmony in the region and international community about an approach on the way forward about recognition," he said.

“The conditions that are needed for recognition of a government, they all exist in the current Afghan government. There is no excuse for the countries in this regard. They should take immediate and responsible steps,” said Waliullah Shaheen, head of the center of strategic studies of the Afghan foreign ministry.

Pakistan is often accused of interfering in Afghanistan's internal affairs, but the Pakistani ambassador to Kabul dismissed the allegations as baseless and stressed that stability in Afghanistan was in his country’s interest.
