Ghani: National Consensus Solution to Current Afghan Crisis

Former President Ashraf Ghani in an audio message said the forming of a national consensus and regional cooperation is the solution to the current Afghan challenges.

He made the remarks in an Eid greeting message.

“A national consensus and accepting each other is the only way to rescue (the country),” he said. “Our future without regional cooperation is difficult because the development is possible regionally and the region can help in the prevention of blasts,” he said.

Ghani also said that humanitarian aid is not helpful to tackle the current economic crisis in the country. He also said that based on his information, over 50 percent of the Afghan population is seeking to leave the country.

“The war which is in Europe reduced the aid to the rest of the world. The economic crisis is expected to begin worldwide,” he said.

Analysts believe that Ghani has squandered many opportunities for the formation of a national consensus and that his remarks will not bring any change to the current situation in Afghanistan.

“Ashraf Ghani talked about the lessons which he didn’t bring into practice himself. In fact, he squandered the best chances for Afghanistan,” said Torek Farhadi, a political analyst.

Earlier, the former chief of intelligence, Rahmatullah Nabil, said on Twitter that Ghani has been trying to lobby for his (Ghani's) return to the country as an advisor for the current government of the Islamic Emirate. However, this claim has yet to be confirmed.
