Turkish Media Reports Arrest of Islamic State Leader in Istanbul

Turkish media reported that anti-terrorism police and intelligence agents arrested Islamic State leader Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi in Istanbul.

A Turkish official on condition of anonymity said that the arrested person had become the leader of the group since its previous chief was killed in a US operation in Syria in February.

Turkish news website OdaTV identified the arrested man as Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi without saying how it obtained the information.

Analysts considered whether the detention of a reported Islamic State leader would affect the group’s activities in Afghanistan:

“The arrest of the leader will not affect the networks launching operations in other countries,” said Asadullah Nadeem, a military analyst.

The Turkish media avoided sharing details of the capture or a photo of the arrested leader.

“There is no direct connection between the arrest of the leader and Daesh group in Afghanistan. But in case of a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, the main Daesh groups from Iraq and Syria will come to Afghanistan,” said Farhad Abrar, international relations expert.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks that have recently occurred in Afghanistan.

However, the Islamic Emirate has repeatedly said that Daesh could not pose a threat in the country.
