Afghan Officials: We Do Not Face Lack of Passport Booklets

General Directorate of Passports officials said there is presently no lack of passport Booklets at the department, refuting claims to the contrary.

The director general of Passports, Abdul Hakim Hamdi, stated that the organization now gives patients, students, and businesspeople priority when issuing passports.

“There are no lack of passports in the department, we still have the passports and we assure the people that the passports have not run out...We will print the passports and fulfill the needs of our compatriots,” Hamdi told TOLOnews.

However, the department admitted there was corruption in the passport distribution process.

"We accept that there is widespread corruption; certain individuals are corrupting the process and distributing fake passports, and 10% of the staff deceives the public and does so. We ask anyone who gets passports in this way to bring it to the department to be checked,” said Abdul Hakim Hamdi, passport director.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate recently approved a new plan to print three million passports.

A Lithuanian corporation will issue the passports, and the cost will be paid by domestic funds.

"The cabinet has confirmed it; all that is needed to do is sign the contract, and we will pay them. They assured us that within a few weeks after the money is paid, they would start printing, and one million passports will be printed and distributed," said Ahmad Wali Haqmal, a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance.

While this is happening, some citizens ask the officials to speed up the passport distribution process.

"I've been waiting for my passport for the past six months. When Ashraf Ghani was in power, I submitted the online form, and then I paid the money to the government afterward to receive my passport quickly,” said Sardar, the passport applicant.
