Earthquake Victims Dying in Transit on Slow, Bad Roads: Residents

Residents of Giyan district of Paktika province said that several people who were injured from the country's recent devastating earthquake died due to delays while being transported to hospitals as a result of the district’s poor roadways.

They urged the Islamic Emirate to pay serious attention to the construction of these roads.

“When the earthquake hit, the injured were transported to the districts and many of the injured died on the way due to road damage,” Munawar Mubariz, a resident of Paktika.

“When the earthquake hit, many people died due to the breakdown of the roads. The road, which should take an hour, takes more than three hours due to deterioration. We ask the Islamic Emirate to asphalt these roads for us,” said Haji Amir, a resident of Barmal district.

“This road has never been built, the whole road is broken, which is why the car arrives here in three hours,” a resident of Giyan district said.

Meanwhile, aid groups said that deteriorating roads are one of the biggest challenges they face in delivering supplies to the affected people in the area.

"The road is too broken down. If the roads had not been damaged, it would have taken us 30 to 45 minutes to reach the hospitals, but bumpy roads caused us to reach Giyan district in two and a half hours,” said Gulabuddin, a member of a relief group.

"Aid from businessmen and some aid agencies is coming to the area in large quantities,” said Sayed Ahmad Silab, head of the Silab Charity Foundation.

But local officials in Paktika said that despite the damage to the roads, much of the aid has reached the affected areas.

Hundreds of residents of Paktika's Giyan and Barmal districts suffered casualties and financial loss as a result of a devastating earthquake last Wednesday night.
