Deprived of Tailoring, Female Students Turn to Tailoring

Female students above grade six who were banned from going to the school have taken up tailoring work in the western province of Herat. 

These girls said that to ward off depression they have taken up tailoring, and now they have salaries and can aid their families economically.

Nearly 70 girls and women work at shop visited by TOLOnews. 

Various types of dresses, bags, jumpers and socks are produced in this workshop. There are male workers working in this factory as well.  

“After students were deprived of school and became unemployed, they took up activity here,” said Bas Gul, the head of the workshop. 

Most of the tailors are those girls that have not been allowed to return to schools and came to the shop for work. 

"Around the date the doors of the schools closed I started work here ... Before now I could sew,” said Zahra Merzaye, a student. 

Some housewives also work in the workshop. Every woman there is breadwinner for their family.  

“Especially in this situation we can cooperate economically with our families,” said Yagana Safare, a Herat resident. 

It has been nearly seventh months since the secondary and high schools were closed for female students.
