Karimi Denies Any Kabul-Islamabad Talks Over Wakhan

Discussion about a contract signed between Kabul and Islamabad on a Wakhan trade route has been circulating on social media but the Islamic Emirate denied any such talks with Pakistan, calling the claims rumors.

Social media users claimed that Pakistan seeks to reach Central Asia via the Wakhan. They said that the Pakistani government has talked with China and Afghanistan in this regard.

Wakhan is a strategic district in the northern province of Badakhshan which connects South Asia to Central Asia.

Karim Khoram, ex-chief of staff of the former Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, said on Twitter that Pakistan sought to implement a transit route through Wakhan during the presidency of Hamid Karzai, but Karzai rejected it.

“Pakistan had constantly asked (former President Hamid) Karzai to cut a road through Wakhan to Pakistan for trade but he didn’t accept it. I have heard this demand has been renewed,” he said.

But the Islamic Emirate denied the claims as rumors.

“There has been no talks about Wakhan with anyone and neither has anyone mentioned it. Every part and every point of the country is inseparable,” said Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.

The analysts said that Wakhan is a vital strategic and economic location for Afghanistan.

“In such issues, Afghanistan’s interests should be considered to find out how it benefits our country economically,” said Waheed Faqiri, an economist.

“If Pakistan wants to reach Central Asia via Wakhan, the Afghan authorities should demand a free and safe path to Gwadar and Wagah ports in return,” said Khan Mohammad Stanikzai, an economist.
