Political Highlights of Past Year in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has gone through many historic and political events since the fall of the republic government a year ago.

The Republican government collapsed, and the Islamic Emirate swept into power 20 years after their first term.

However, despite efforts by the Islamic Emirate—with many conferences held on Afghanistan—no country has yet recognized the government of the Islamic Emirate.

There some countries whose embassies are opened in Kabul.

One year ago, on the 24th of Assad of 1400 (solar year), the Islamic Emirate’s forces overran many provinces and reached Kabul's gates.

Kabul city plunged into chaos and worries spread among the residents of Kabul. Within hours, the forces of the Islamic Emirate entered the city.

On the same day, the former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, appeared on a TV message and announced that former President Ashraf Ghani had left the country.

“The former president left Afghanistan,” he said.

“We are trying to talk with the leaders of the Taliban to solve the Afghanistan problems via peaceful, brotherly means,” said former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

On the evening of the same day, Al-Jazeera aired the Islamic Emirate forces entering the Arg palace.

Around the same time, the  then head of the Qatar political office, who is now the first Deputy Prime Minister, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, appeared in a TV message and ensured that the life and property of everyone would be safe.

“We didn’t have very much responsibility before,” he said.

Mullah Baradar was also the first Islamic Emirate official who arrived in Kandahar, three days after the Islamic Emirate overran Kabul city.

When the Islamic Emirate came to power in Afghanistan, the US embassy started the evacuation of its employees and other staff from its Kabul embassy.

The US also airlifted its employees out of the Deh Sabz area of Kabul.

Islamic Emirate spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid held a press conference on the third day after the collapse and announced the general amnesty declared by the Islamic Emirate’s leader, Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada.

“This amnesty is aimed to prevent fighting,” he said.

On September 7, 2021, the Islamic Emirate announced its cabinet: Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund was appointed as Prime Minister (head of state). Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar was appointed as the first Deputy Prime Minister. Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi was appointed as the second Deputy Prime Minister.

“The leadership considered it necessary to form a caretaker government for now,” the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman said at a press conference.

Many international meetings on Afghanistan were held over the last year.

Two months after the Islamic Emirate swept into power, the first conference was held in Moscow, in which a delegation of the Islamic Emirate was invited for the first time.

Following the Moscow conference, dozens of summits on an international level have so far been held on Afghanistan, including the Troika Plus conference.

“Lack of recognition of the Islamic Emirate by the international community and economic, political, and security challenges shows that the situation in Afghanistan is destabilized,” said Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia.

After several months, some countries have reopened their embassies in Kabul.

China, Uzbekistan, European Union, Russia and the UAE reopened their embassies. Russia, China, Iran and Pakistan are the countries where the Islamic Emirate currently has a diplomatic presence.

However, these countries said that the reopening of the Islamic Emirate’s diplomatic missions does not reflect their recognition.

Eight months after leaving the country, the former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in a congratulation message on the occasion of Nawroz that the ongoing problems should be solved via national dialogue.

“It is necessary to launch a national dialogue among ourselves,” he said.

Despite passing the one-year mark of the Islamic Emirate’s being in power, Afghanistan is lacking a constitution and specific flag, and there is a growing humanitarian and economic crisis.

“A kack of definition of the current Afghan government and a formation based on a constitution are the main reasons for political, economic, social and security destabilization in Afghanistan,” said Subhanallah Musbah, a lawyer.

The summit of the religious clerics in the Loya Jirga Hall was one of the main events of the past year.

The gathering was not covered by the media and there were no female representatives in it.

Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada reportedly participated in the event.

“We will not listen to the world on issues that go against God,” he said.

The international community has said that respecting human rights, women’s rights, girls' access to education and countering terrorism are the main conditions for recognition of the caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate.
