December 11 marks the second anniversary of the death of well-known novelist, journalist, and literary scholar Mohammad Azam Rahnaward Zaryab, the well-known novelist who died in 1399.

He spent over 50 years of his life writing about Persian and Afghan culture and wrote acclaimed novels and other works. He wrote a dozen literary works.

Zaryab worked as a print and TV journalist and editor throughout his career and worked as an editor for TOLO TV/TOLOnews in Kabul for over 10 years.

"The books he wrote, the novels he wrote, were fantastic and people love them," said Noor Ahmad Khalidi, a writer.

"His name is not only in our country's literature but it is also in the literature of Tajikistan, Iran and India," said Yahya Chawoshi, a member of the Poets and Writers Union.

Zaryab had many fans, not only in Afghanistan but also in Persian-speaking countries, and he won several national and international awards.

His novel “Chahar Gerd Qala Gashtam” won the Jalal Al-e Ahmad Literary Award in Iran in 1395.

Zaryab’s most famous novels include Gulnara and Ayeena, Shahr-e-Telism, and Dokhter Shah Pariyan.

Zaryab studied for his bachelor’s in journalism at Kabul University and took his master’s degree in Great Britain.

Zaryab was born in 1323 and died in 1399 from Covid-19 at the age of seventy-six.
