New Banknotes Distributed to Commercial Banks

The Central Bank said that the process of distributing 100 million new banknotes to the country's commercial banks has begun.

The Central Bank said in a statement that the first tranche of 100 million new banknotes--with denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100--were distributed to banks, and worn-out banknotes were collected. The Central Bank urged the citizens to make a greater effort to preserve the banknotes.

“Da Afghanistan Bank, as the Central Bank, has the job of monetary policy, to print banknotes and distribute them to the market. While considering the policy for and demands of the market it collects the warn-out banknotes and inject new banknotes,” said Hassibullah Noori, a spokesman for the Central Bank.

This comes as the Union of Money Exchange Market of Sarai Shahzada expressed concerns over the worn-out of banknotes and said this has created problems in business dealings.

“The worn-out banknotes are really a big problem. I hope the new banknotes replace the worn-out banknotes as soon as possible and these problems that exist in our money-exchange market all over Afghanistan will be solved soon,” said Abdul Rahman Zirak, a spokesman for the union.

Meanwhile, the residents of Kabul welcomed the distribution of new banknotes to the commercial banks.

“The worn-out money is a problem. First, I don’t take it, if I take it, others will not take it from me,” said Zabiullah, a resident of Kabul.

“Our demand to the Central Bank is that the banknotes which are printed in foreign countries should be brought into this market, so this problem will be solved,” said a resident of Kabul.

Earlier, Shah Mohammad Mehrabi, a member of the Supreme Council of Da Afghanistan Bank told TOLOnews that the “last batch of banknotes printed by PWPW will be delivered in January 2023.”

“The contractual obligation of Oberthur Fiduciaire is to deliver half of the printed Afghani banknotes in May 2023 and the reminder at the end of the year,” Mehrabi told TOLOnews.
