Regional Security Officials Meet in Moscow, Discuss Afghanistan

The fifth multilateral meeting of security envoys was held on Wednesday in Moscow, during which they discussed the situation in Afghanistan and in the region.

The Russian News Agency TASS reported that the Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev said that Washington intends to continue its geopolitical experiments, including in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

“We are talking about more than a thousand armored vehicles and armored personnel carriers, dozens of aircraft and helicopters, hundreds of artillery pieces, mortars, anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems, as well as hundreds of thousands of heavy and light small arms worth tens of billions of dollars,” the Russian security chief said, as quoted by TASS.

The Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, said peace and stability in Afghanistan is Tehran’s priority.

"We believe and proceed from the fact that the presence of the United States destabilizes the region. Afghanistan confirms this. The events in Iraq, the creation of the Islamic State in the Levant region, and also, the events in Ukraine occurred as a result of arrogant actions by the United States. The people of Ukraine have fallen victim to US aims," Shamkhani said as cited by TASS.

The Islamic Emirate was not invited to the meeting.

Political analysts gave various opinions on the topic.

“The central point of this meeting is security concerns and they will discuss how to prevent the scenarios that might happen in the future,” said Ahmad Munib Rasa, a political analyst.

This comes as the Islamic Emirate said that it welcomes any meeting which benefits Afghanistan.

“Any meeting which is about the situation of Afghanistan is hopeful and helpful. But we hope that the representative of Afghanistan will be present in such meetings. Secondly, the countries and regions should be assured about Afghanistan,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, Islamic Emirate’s spokesman.

The top security officials from Russia, Iran, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan attended the meeting.
