Badakhshan Students Call for Reopening of Secondary Schools for Girls

Female students from secondary schools in Badakhshan on Saturday asked the Islamic Emirate to allow their education as the new school year has started.

Several of these girls who are learning carpet weaving in a workshop said that to prevent anxiety and depression, they have to join the workshop.

“We have faced mental health issues after being deprived of schooling,” said Breshna, a student.

“If they want Hijab we will wear it and we will accept any conditions. They should only let us go to schools,” said Farzana, a student.

“We accept their conditions if they want to change school subjects change it but they should reopen schools for us,” said Mursal Niazi, a student.

Meanwhile, some activists in Badakhshan said that the closure of girls’ schools is no benefit for the country.

“No country can progress without women,” said Zmari Naseeri, an activist.

"Schools have to open so that girls can get an education,” said Angiza Bedar, an activist.

Local officials in Badakhshan said that to reopen girls' secondary schools they are waiting for the leadership's order.

“Whenever Islamic Emirate leadership orders the reopening of schools we will open schools without any problem,” said Moezuddin Ahmadi, head of the Information and Culture in Badakhshan.

Secondary schools are closed for girls over the past nearly two years. Many international organizations, including the UN, have called for the reopening of schools for girls.
