World's Demands on Afghanistan Discussed at Samarkand

Participants at the Samarkand summit for countries neighboring Afghanistan discussed the international community's demands for an inclusive government and rights for women and minorities, as well as about countering terrorism and the drug trade, according to a statement of Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

The statement said that the parties in the 4th meeting of neighboring countries of Afghanistan “discussed the existing condition in Afghanistan, the implementation of the main demands of the world community by the current authorities of Afghanistan, such as the creation of an inclusive government, the opportunity for Afghan women to work and receive education, and ensuring the rights of national minorities.”

The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amir Khan Muttaqi, also participated in the conference.

"Afghanistan will be the center of connectivity, economy and transit. The security in Afghanistan is ensured unlike any other time over the past 40 years. The situation there is laid out both for trade and investment," Muttaqi said.

Muttaqi said the meeting in Samarkand was good and that the participants stressed that Afghanistan should be secured and that it has taken good steps regarding the economy, politics and relations with other countries.

He said the participants sought to have good ties with Afghanistan.

"We are happy to meet representatives of all regional countries today. Everyone seeks to have good relations with Afghanistan, both in political and economic and transit fields," Muttaqi said.

An informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russian, Pakistan and Iran was held on the sidelines of the conference.

The Iran Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said that the call of the regional countries for the formation of the inclusive government does not mean interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

"We have been waiting for the formation of an inclusive government for the past 21 months. Let's hear sweet talks from you,"  Abdollahian said.

A political analyst, Mohammad Rahimi, said: "The basic reason for these meetings is two issues: to counter the threats from Afghanistan and to take advantage of the situation in Afghanistan for individual interests."

The meeting of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries that focused on the Afghan situation was held for two days.
