Afghan, Iran Officials Discuss Border Issues: MoD

A senior delegation from Iran, led by the head of the Planning and Operations Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Bahram Hosseini Motlagh arrived in Kabul and held a discussion over the strengthening of cooperation on the border, the Ministry of Defense said.

The two-day meeting was finished on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense said on Twitter.

“In this meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral border issues,” said Enayatullah Khwarizmi, a spokesman for the MoD.

According to the MoD, the deputy chief of army staff of the Islamic Emirate told the Iranian delegation that Kabul seeks good relations with Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a meeting with officials of the Iranian foreign ministry said there are "hands of foreigners to create problems between Iran and its neighbors" and they should be "prevented," according to Khamenei's office.

This comes as the political analysts believe that border laws should come into effect by the two countries in a bid to prevent border problems.

“If the neighborhood and international border laws are observed, there will be solutions to problems on the borders between the two countries; and also observation of the agreements made between the two countries can solve the border issues,” said Aziz Maarij, former diplomat.

“Today, their arrival in Kabul means that they have understood the issue pretty well that they are facing -- the economic and political problems,” said Mohammad Zalmai Afghanyar, a political analyst.

This comes as tensions have risen recently over the Helmand water treaty between Kabul and Tehran.
