The Pakistan’s permanent representative at the UN, Munir Akram, called for the reviving of the Afghan economy through the release of its assets abroad as well as the revision of its banking system.

Speaking to the Security Council, Akram said that the world cannot let the Afghan people "be consigned to prolonged poverty.”

“Almost 95 percent of Afghanistan’s population exists in extreme poverty,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy (MoE) said that poverty will decline if the frozen Afghan assets are released.

More than $9 billion in assets were frozen after the Islamic Emirate came to power.

“One of the main reasons for poverty in Afghanistan is the freezing of Afghan assets by the US. We call on the international community to consider delivering development aid to Afghanistan,” said Abdul Latif Nazari, the deputy MoE.

“If the Taliban wants to be off the sanctions list of the UN… and also from the blacklist of the EU, they should continue their negotiations through diplomacy,” said Seyar Qureshi, an economist.

When the Islamic Emirate came to power, Afghanistan plunged into a crisis after the international community suspended aid and the country’s $9.5 billion assets in foreign reserves were frozen.
