Muttaqi Meets UN’s Otunbayeva to Discuss Country, Region

The head of UNAMA, Roza Otunbayeva, in a meeting with the Islamic Emirate's acting foreign minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, discussed a number of issues, including the interaction between Afghanistan and the international community, the current situation in Afghanistan and the region.

The deputy spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal quoted Muttaqi as saying that now is the time to take "practical steps instead of theoretical discussions" to reduce people's problems.

Takal also quoted Otunbayeva as saying that the UN's priority in Afghanistan is to address the humanitarian situation and strive to provide Afghanistan with development aid in addition to humanitarian help.

"This meeting discussed the interaction between Afghanistan and the international community, the situation in Afghanistan and the region, and the roadmap for future interaction," Takal noted.

Amir Khan Muttaqi stressed his willingness to interact with the world during his speech at the meeting and promised thorough collaboration with aid organizations.

Some political analysts believe that the current government should reconsider its policies on the interaction of the international community with Afghanistan.

"The Taliban needs to change its internal policy so that the way to interact with the world is open and so it deserves to be recognized by the world,” said Wahid Faqiri, an international relations analyst.

"If we have relations based on a single definition of Afghanistan's national interests, we will never face problems,” said Zalyamy Afghanyar, a political analyst.

Nearly two years have passed since the Islamic Emirate came to power, but so far it has not been recognized by the international community.
