The US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller asked the Islamic Emirate to release Americans detained in Afghanistan.
Speaking at a press briefing, Miller said that the detaining of American citizens in Afghanistan is a “significant obstacle” to positive engagement with Afghanistan.
“U.S. officials have continuously, consistently pressed – including in meetings with Taliban representatives – for the immediate and unconditional release of Americans detained in Afghanistan, noting that these tensions are a significant obstacle to positive engagement,” Miller noted.
Although the Islamic Emirate did not comment on this, it has said that any foreign citizen who acts against the country's laws will be arrested.
Some political analysts believe that to improve relations between Kabul and Washington, both sides should consider each other’s demands.
“The detention of American citizens in Afghanistan has a negative impact on the relations between Afghanistan and the United States, and the United States is particularly sensitive to this issue," commented Wahid Faqiri, a political analyst.
Earlier, Michael McCaul, the chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, at a committee session said that they will continue their efforts to free the American citizens held hostage by the Islamic Emirate.
McCaul added that Republicans and Democrats alike will not tolerate the "illegitimate" detention of American citizens.
