Former US CENTCOM Commander Calls Doha Agreement ‘Mistake’

Frank McKenzie, the former commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), called the Doha Agreement a "mistake" in an interview with CBS.

In this interview, McKenzie said that more attention should have been paid to the signing of the agreement.

The former CENTCOM commander stated: "Had we actually stuck to the strict terms of the agreement, we might have been able to make something of it. But in fact we treated the Doha agreement as a schedule to depart Afghanistan. And that policy — remained across two US presidents, President Trump and President Biden.”

However, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, reacted to the former CENTCOM commander's remarks, calling the Doha Agreement victorious and saying that such comments from former American officials cannot hide Washington's failure regarding the Doha Agreement.

The spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate also said that the Doha Agreement was important for Afghanistan because, based on it, all foreign forces left Afghanistan.

Mujahid added: "These generals who were defeated in Afghanistan are naturally not happy, and this decision was a decisive one for Afghans, leading to the end of the occupation of Afghanistan."

A number of political and military analysts consider the Doha Agreement important for ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan and emphasized its complete implementation.

Aziz Stanekzai, a political analyst, said: "The Doha Agreement was a vital agreement for Afghans. As many as 400 bodies were being buried in Afghanistan every day, and many young people from both sides were losing their lives, which this agreement stopped."

Abdulhadi Quraishi, a military analyst, told TOLOnews: "There were four major points in this agreement, which included human rights issues, drug issues, the fight against terrorism, and the establishment of a legitimate government."

The Doha Agreement was signed on the 29th of February, 2020, between Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US representative for Afghan peace, and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the then deputy political office chief of the Islamic Emirate in Qatar. Nearly five years later, both sides have repeatedly accused the other of violations.
