The Prisons Administration said that currently 1,500 children in the country's Juvenile Rehabilitation Centers are engaged in both religious and modern education.

According to statistics from the Prisons Administration, alongside religious and modern education, detainees in these centers also receive vocational training in five areas.

Out of the 1,500 children, 333 are in the Kabul Juvenile Rehabilitation Center.

The deputy head of the Office of the Prison Administration, Habibullah Badr, said at the graduation ceremony for the memorization of the Holy Quran at the Kabul Juvenile Rehabilitation Center: “In the 34 provinces, they are receiving education. We have 1,500 children in all our prisons.”

Nazar Mohammad Naseri, former head of the the Kabul Juvenile Rehabilitation Center, said: “This is an honor that other countries do not have, whether they are Islamic or non-Islamic, but we proudly say that the prisons and reform centers of the Islamic Emirate are places of knowledge and reform.”

According to officials, prisons and Juvenile Rehabilitation Centers have transformed into educational centers in the past three years.

Ziaurrahman Saeed, head of Human Rights at the Prisons Administration, said at the ceremony: “Continuous lessons are ongoing for prisoners in provincial or central prisons.”

Atiqullah, head of the Criminal Court of the Supreme Court, also said: “Keep this goal in mind, this is a reform center; its purpose is reform, not punishment or burden.”

Meanwhile, some detainees said the establishment of educational centers in prisons beneficial for inmates.

Usman, a detainee, told TOLOnews: “I was able to memorize the Quran in these ten months and regret my past actions outside.”

Haseeb, another detainee, said: “We studied school lessons and learned the tailoring profession. We thank the Ashiana organization for the facilities they have provided here.”

According to the Prisons Administration, more than 20,000 prisoners are currently in various prisons across the country for different crimes.
