Traditional methods of treating fractures still have many supporters in Nimroz province.
Many patients who suffer from bone fractures prefer visiting a traditional bone setter rather than a doctor.
Abdul Karim, one of the traditional bone setters in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz, has been treating fractures for 40 years. He said he has also trained several family members.
"My eldest son and my second son are involved in this work. I have trained them, and the female patients are treated by my family members in the women's section," Abdul Karim told TOLOnews.
Most of this traditional healer's clients are individuals who have been injured in traffic accidents or other incidents. Patients are very satisfied with Abdul Karim's traditional treatments.
"I hadn't come here myself, but many of my friends had. We put our trust in God and see what happens," said Azimullah, a resident of Nimroz.
"We have seen a lot of good from them, and when our children's hands and feet are injured, we come here," said Mohammad Hashim, another resident of Nimroz.
Meanwhile, doctors said that some serious fractures need to be treated in hospitals.
"Professional treatment by a physician is in accordance with science and expertise and is better. Due to the lack of specialist doctors in some areas, people are forced to seek traditional treatments," said Ahmad Farid Karimi, a doctor.
Traditional bone setting has been practiced for many years, especially in rural and remote areas of the country, due to the lack of doctors and medicine. Even now, some people prefer visiting a traditional bone setter rather than a doctor.
