UNDP: Natural Disasters Becoming Major Threat in Afghanistan

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said in its new report that climate is affecting Afghanistan and to support the country, effective actions should be taken.

According to UNDP, natural events such as floods, droughts, and earthquakes have made the communities of Afghanistan vulnerable and in need of humanitarian aid.

UNDP said that it has helped people with aid of more than  $230 million dollars in 2024.

According to the UNDP report: “Afghanistan ranks as the world's seventh most vulnerable country to climate change despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. Natural disasters are becoming a major threat for Afghanistan as floods, earthquakes, and droughts deal major blows to communities with limited capacity to respond to and recover from these shocks.”

Abdul Nasir Rashtiya, an expert on economic issues, said: "The first world countries or industrialized countries were able to earn huge profits by emitting more greenhouse gasses, so there is a need to help developing countries in preventing the damage caused by the emission of greenhouse gases."

The Agriculture and Livestock Room said that the United Nations organization must provide shelter and food for those farmers who are harmed by natural disasters.

Mirwais Hajizada, the first deputy of Agriculture and Livestock Room, said: ” Charity institutions, charitable foundations, and businessmen should help our nation, the nation that suffered, whether the common people or the houses were damaged, in the shelter sector.”

On the other hand, the Ministry of Economy said it is important to continue providing aid to those affected by natural events in Afghanistan.

The ministry adds that after the floods in some provinces in the past three months, most families have faced economic challenges, and until now, along with the United Nations institutions, the European Union, and some other countries, including Turkey, Uzbekistan, Qatar, and Iran. They have given their aid to the people of Afghanistan

Abdul Raman Habib, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Economics, said: “Responsible committees in addition to emergency aid, and health services assist financial aid to the heirs of martyrs and farmers whose cattle were lost in various provinces."

This comes as recent floods have caused major damage in Baghlan, Faryab, Ghor, Takhar, and Badakhshan.
