Storms, heavy winds, and rainfall in Surkh Rod District, Nangarhar, have claimed the lives of 11 members of a single family. Relatives of the deceased say they had gathered at a house in the district to celebrate the birth of a newborn when sudden storms and heavy winds struck, resulting in the tragic deaths of 11 family members.
Mutabar Khan, a 60-year-old resident of the Numarat-e-Shukrullah in Surkh Rod District said that four other individuals were also injured in the incident. “My grandchild was just born, and relatives had come to our home to celebrate. This incident occurred while the house was full of guests, and we lost eleven members of our family,” said Mutabar Khan.
“Including the homeowner, two sisters, their brother, five grandchildren, and his wife, a total of eleven people perished,” said Hanif, another relative of the victims.
Neighbors of the family recounted their attempts to help during the storm. Samiullah, a neighbor, described the scene as saying: “When we arrived, the situation was indescribable. We managed to retrieve eleven bodies and four injured people.”
Close relatives mentioned that the family faces serious economic challenges and called on the interim government and aid organizations for assistance.
Mirzaman, a relative of the victims, said: “This family leads a poor life and has lost everything they had.” Nazanin, another relative, lamented, “All our belongings and our children’s possessions are gone.”
The severe winds and storms on Monday in Nangarhar caused not only fatalities and significant financial losses but also destroyed hundreds of acres of farmland, orchards, and public infrastructure in the province's center and several districts.
